Builders build,
Painters paint,
Writers write,
Society thinks a builder can’t be a poet.
Or that a lawyer is better,
Or an accountant,
Or a marketer.
I think some poets are builders too,
And some painters can make new landscapes.
I think we have too many ordinary people who aren’t ordinary,
And too many extraordinary people who are just pretenders.
Workers work,
That’s what you’re really saying.
As long as we work for your ideals,
That’s what you really mean.
Except your pockets keep getting fuller,
And ours smaller,
And smaller,
Small,
Empty,
Nil.
